Zain’s Swiss Summer Oats – Ten Signature Flavours

Whilst living in Switzerland on an apple and pear orchard, I learned a recipe for ‘Bircher’ or ‘Swiss’ style breakfast oats. The altitude where I lived was quite high and the summer sun would beat down on us even as early as 6am, which made the thought of a hot breakfast unbearable.  It was then that I was introduced to this incredible, energy-boosting recipe made with raw oats! Nonetheless, I gave it a go and it tasted magnificent.

I have since transformed the recipe to create my very own clean version of Swiss Summer Oats and I am so excited to share my ten signature flavours with you.  Feel free to let me know which of these are your favourite!

*Note – The oats can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, prepare a batch in advance for a quick, clean, grab and go breakfast!

**Any of the below flavours can be made vegan by substituting Greek Yogurt for Coconut Yogurt (same measurement) and raw chocolate or carob.  My Summer Oats are gluten-free (I use uncontaminated oats) but you can substitue for 1/2 cup soaked millet instead if you prefer.

***Any of the below flavours can be made gluten-free by substituting for uncontaminated oats, brown rice, quinoa, millet or buckwheat groats.

****I use 250ml mason jars for my summer oats as they are the perfect proportion, you can purchase these at any large supermarket or specialty store

Zain’s Chocolate Hazelnut Summer Oats (aka Ferraro Rochet Oats)

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Flax Seeds

1/2 Tbsp Hazelnut Butter

11/2 Tbsp Cacao Powder

1 Tbsp Unsweetened Cacao Chips (Optional)

5-7 Drops Liquid Stevia (I use Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme Flavour) OR Sweetener of Your Choice (Honey, Agave, Stevia Powder etc.)

6 Whole or Chopped Hazelnuts (Optional Topping)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, flax seeds, and sweetener of your choice, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add hazelnut butter, cacao powder, cacao chips and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with hazelnuts and additional chocolate chips

Zain’s Mixed Berry Vanilla Summer Oats (aka Pre-Workout Pumped Oats)

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Chia Seeds

1/4 Cup Strawberries (sliced)

1/4 Cup Raspberries

1/4 Cup Blackberries

1/4 Cup Blueberries

1/2 Tbsp Unsweetened Mixed Berry Jam

1/2 Scoop Vanilla Whey Protein Powder OR Protein Powder of Your Choice

5-7 Drops Liquid Stevia (I use Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme Flavour) OR Sweetener of Your Choice (Honey, Agave, Stevia Powder etc.)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, protein powder and sweetener of your choice, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add berries and jam stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with mixed berries

Zain’s Sweet Cherry Pie Summer Oats

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Flax Seeds

1/2 Tbsp Crunchy Almond Butter (Raw or Roasted)

1/8 Tsp Cinnamon

1/8 Tsp All Spice

15 Red Cherries

2-3 Drops Natural Almond Extract (Optional But Recommended)

5-7 Drops Liquid Stevia (I use Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme Flavour) OR Sweetener of Your Choice (Honey, Agave, Stevia Powder etc.)

6 Almonds Chopped or Whole (Optional Topping)

2 Tbsp Granola (Optional Topping, I used Zain’s Best Ever Granola Recipe with Dried Cherries)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, flax seeds, almond extract, spices, sweetener of your choice, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add almond butter, and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with chopped almonds and a cherry of course

Zain’s Pecan Caramel Pie Summer Oats (aka Turtles Oats)

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Flax Seeds

1/2 Tbsp Pecan Butter (Raw or Roasted)

3 Medjool Dates

1/8 Cup Chopped Pecans (I caramelized all of my pecans by heating an additional 1 Tbsp maple syrup and adding the pecans until caramelized)

1 Tbsp Maple Syrup

1/16 Tsp Natural Vanilla

1 Vanilla Pod (Optional)

6 Whole or Chopped Caramelized Pecans (Optional Topping)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, flax seeds, and maple syrup, cover and shake vigorously

3. Add pecan butter and pecans (caramelized or not), stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with caramelized pecans

Zain’s Cafe Mocha Chip Summer Oats (aka Pick Me Up Oats)

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Espresso Coffee (Black)

1/8 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Chia Seeds

11/2 Tbsp Cacao Powder

1 Tbsp Unsweetened Cacao Nibs (Optional)

7-10 Drops Liquid Stevia (I use Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme Flavour) OR Sweetener of Your Choice (Honey, Agave, Stevia Powder etc.)

3 Unsweetened Chocolate Chips (optional)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, espresso, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, and sweetener of your choice, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add cacao powder and cacao nibs and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with coffee beans and additional cacao nibs

Zain’s Classic Peanut Butter and Banana OR PB & J Summer Oats

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Flax Seeds

1/2 Tbsp Peanut Butter

11/2 Tbsp Unsweetened Strawberry Jam (Option 1) OR

1 Banana (sliced) + 1/8 Tsp Cinnamon (Option 2)

5-7 Drops Liquid Stevia (I use Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme Flavour) OR Sweetener of Your Choice (Honey, Agave, Stevia Powder etc.)

6 Whole or Chopped Peanuts (Optional Topping)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, flax seeds, and sweetener of your choice, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add peanut butter, optional cacao, and banana slices and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with peanuts and sliced banana

Zain’s Arabian Nights Summer Oats

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Chia Seeds

1 Tbsp Tahini

20 Pistachios (Chopped, Whole or Both, divided)

1 Tbsp Raw Honey

4 Medjool Dates (chopped)

1/8 tsp Sesame Seeds (Optional)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, and honey, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add tahini and pistachios and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with pistachios, sesame seeds, dates, and a drizzle of honey

Zain’s Peaches & Creme Summer Oats

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/8 Cup Unsweetened Milk of Your Choice (I use homemade unsweetened almond milk, you may choose to use skim, brown rice, soy)

1/3 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Chia Seeds

1/8 Tsp Natural Vanilla

1 Vanilla Pod (Optional)

1/2 Tbsp Unsweetened Peach Jam

1 Ripe White Peach (sliced/cubed)

1 Tbsp Fat Free Cream Cheese (melted)

5-7 Drops Liquid Stevia (I use Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme Flavour) OR Sweetener of Your Choice (Honey, Agave, Stevia Powder etc.)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, and sweetener of your choice, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add peach, melted cream cheese and peach jam and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with sliced peaches

Zain’s Island Paradise Summer Oats

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Light Coconut Milk

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Chia Seeds

15g Fresh Coconut Meat OR Unsweetened Coconut Flakes (Divided)

1/2 Cup Fresh Mango (Divided)

5-7 Drops Liquid Stevia (I use Sweet Leaf) OR Sweetener of Your Choice (Honey, Agave, Stevia Powder etc.)

3 Macadamia Nuts (Chopped or Whole, Optional)

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, coconut milk, yogurt, chia seeds, and sweetener of your choice, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add coconut and mango and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with fresh mango, coconut, macadamia nuts

Zain’s Superfood Trail Mix Summer Oats

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Slow Cook Oats

1/3 Cup Kefir

1/4 Heaping Cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt

11/2 Tsp Flax Seeds

1 Tbsp Raw Cashews

8g Walnuts

25 Raisins

1 Tbsp Goji Berries

1/4 Scoop Sun Warrior Protein Powder OR Protein Powder of Your Choice

1/8 Tsp Cinnamon

1/4 Cup Blueberries

1/4 Tsp Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

1 Tsp Manuka 25+ Honey

Directions:

1. Using a half pint (1 Cup) glass jar, combine oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, protein powder, cinnamon and Manuka honey, cover and shake vigorously

2. Add cashews, raisins, goji berries, blueberries, and coconut oil and stir until mixed well

3. Refrigerate overnight and serve chilled, topped with nuts and dried fruit of your choice
